CURLY NIKKI'S CHICAGO'S NATURAL HAIR MEET-UP

Nadirah’s Perspective:

On September 22, hubby and I attended a Natural Hair Meet-up that was sponsored by Motions and hosted by renowned natural hair blogger, Curly Nikki. The event was held at Japonais Restaurant located at 600 W. Chicago Avenue which is down the street from the historic Chicago Tribune building.  Upon arrival, it was so wonderful to see the plethora of beautiful brown women celebrating their “crowns of glory.” I saw the various hair stylings of: wash n go’s, braids, coils, twist-outs, braid-outs, updos, buns, blow-outs, locs, etc.; manes that were accentuated with hues of black, blond, red, or brown that were then dressed with adornments of flowers, bows, scarves, headbands, and so on.  It was magnificent! As the woman congregated with drinks and conversation between the bi-level floors, waiters were reappearing with hors d'oeuvres of: California sushi rolls, skewered chicken satay, and mini Wagyu beef burgers (BTW… the food was delicious).

Sadly, I didn't get the chance to share a photo with the hostess of the event but I did have the pleasure of sharing some camera time with some other extraordinary women that also happened to be celebrated bloggers as well. Photos and corresponding blog addresses will be provided below.

Overall, this was a great event to have attended with my hubby as we continue to bask in the greatness that is self-love and appreciation of our unique appearances. Each woman we saw exuded a personal flair that could not be duplicated even if we wanted to try. However, throughout our unique exteriors, one thing did bond us together… THE LOVE AND CARE WE HAVE FOR OUR HAIR!

Troy's Perspective:

As a bald man, attending a natural hair meet up was very interesting and exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing and being a part of an event that truly celebrated the pride, grace and elegance of having natural curly hair.  It was an honor to be in the presence of so many women of all shapes, sizes and colors embracing their God-given beauty. The natural hair movement is one that I support wholeheartedly. The facade of having to put chemicals in our hair regularly is not true beauty. True beauty comes from studying, learning, embracing mastering and perfecting what you have. That is not only true for your hair but the life that you are blessed to have. The exquisiteness and love from my wife, I can never get from any other, but as a man I was pleased to be encircled by women of all origins displaying their creativity, showcasing their striking manes. As an artist by nature, it was like being at an art show.

Getting the opportunity to speak with naturals and bloggers from all over the country, this event was one that I will never forget. As a man and husband of a beautiful natural woman, I was pleased to see the gathered support from other naturals applauding my efforts of supporting my wife’s natural transition. As I explained to others that asked, the hardest part of the transition is the initial change.

Once overcoming the initial change, I began to research and see the benefits of being natural for myself. The benefits are truly astonishing, from my wife being able to get her hair wet and the sweet smell of natural hair without chemicals was priceless. Others soon began to tell their stories and how limited they were when they were bonded by having perms and weaves. To all my natural women, “keep-it curly” and to all my non-natural women:

“Seek to be your best since your best is what God has blessed you with.”

PET OWNERS AND THEIR PETS

The Lugg Family
Nadirah’s Perspective:

On September 22, hubby and I had the unfortunate experience of having to euthanize our beloved dog, Joy.  Sadly, after weeks of erratic behavior and numerous hospital visits, she was diagnosed with a form of stomach cancer. Although it was a difficult decision to make, we could no longer watch “our baby girl” suffer and made the most heart wrenching decision ever.  Now I am well aware they some people will read this post and may remark the follow: “It was just a dog!” or “You can get another one.”  (And my favorite one) “Are you serious?” and seven years ago, I probably would have felt the same way. However, having the responsible of caring, feeding, teaching another life does change one’s perspective.

No my husband and I have not given birth to a child, but the love and attention that we gave Joy helped to create our family of three.   I myself was surprised to experience the amount of shed tears and grief placed in my heart by the memories of our dog; but as always, I will take this as a learning experience.  When hubby and I do decide to have children, I’ve learned that we have similar beliefs on child rearing, that my hubby is very loving and compassionate about the welfare of others (humans or animals), and that I can accept the challenges and hard decisions that goes along with the valiant duties of motherhood.  All and all, I am grateful for the time and love shared with Joy and I welcome the comical memories that creep into my daydreams knowing that I have become what I use to ridicule… an emotional but loving pet owner.

WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU JOY AND YOU WILL BE MISSED!!! J

Nadirah & Baby Girl Joy

Troy’s Perspective:

Being a first time pet owner was a new experience for my wife and I. Seven years ago I would have never imagined the pain and grief felt once our beloved pet was no more. The truth is, our pet and many around the world are true companions, love ones, friends and part of the family. After our dog, Joy, was diagnosed with stomach cancer, it was a very hard decision to have her euthanized.  It was truly the biggest decision that we had to make together as a family because we could no longer stand to see her suffer.

As the sedative was being injected into her veins, I could not tolerate the thought to stay in the room. I immediately began to feel distress. I quickly excused myself and tried to think of the reasoning behind our decision.  My wife had taken the strongest stance of us both by staying in the room and holding Joy during her injections. The thought makes me tear up, thinking of our loyal, trusting companion being put to sleep forever. After speaking with my wife (who could barely talk after the procedure), she devastatingly mentioned that Joy let out a final tear as she took her last breath.  Not having children of our own, Joy was our child and beyond a doubt was a vital part of our family.

It certainly holds true that you really don’t know what you have until it’s gone. I would have never imagined that I would have shed as many tears, felt pain, and sadness the way I did for our beloved Joy. Many people love their pets and develop a bond that fulfills their life and I am thankful to have that experience that I never knew or understood before.  This experience was a true eye opener. Spend time, cherish the moments and appreciate the time you have with love ones because you never know when it will all come to an end. Spread and appreciate the blessings that we have as human beings… the gift of love.

Joy you will forever be in our hearts!!!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Nadirah’s Perspective:

On Friday, September 14, I had the privilege of acting in a theatre production of Charles Fuller’s Zooman and the Sign.  For a little background information, Charles Fuller is the famous American playwright that wrote, A Soldier's Play, (later renamed A Soldier’s Story for the film production starring a younger Denzel Washington) for which he received the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.  Anyhoo, Zooman and the Sign is about a black teen named Zooman who aimlessly shoots and kills a young girl named Jinny on her own front porch.  Zooman presents himself as a helpless product of his society, but Jinny’s father, Rueben tries to convince his neighbors that they need to stand together to achieve justice. Rueben decides to place a sign on his property placing blame on the neighbors for not speaking up about what they witnessed in order to bring forth Jinny’s murderer. However, the sign starts to bring about conflict among his wife Rachel, their son Victor, extended family members (Uncle Emmett and Cousin Ash), and other disgruntled neighbors.

Overall, the premise of the story provokes the question of whether or not you would be willing to speak up if you witness a murder or a crime in general.  I know that it’s a tough question to ponder but personally, I feel that it will be my test and duty as a human being to speak up if I witness some form of injustice in the world.  We live in an era where the ideology of “Don’t Snitch” is saturated within rap/song lyrics, television shows, and movies; nevertheless, is this helping or hurting us as a society?  I believe when we master a code of silence, we enable criminals/murderers to continue on their vicious cycles of violence and other various criminal activities.

Per various news websites, within the city of Chicago, more than 300 people were killed in Chicago between January and July 2012, a nearly 30 percent increase over the last year.  As of last week, that number is up to 374.  Would this number lessen if more people opted to call tip hotlines and/or called the police when threats are spewed aloud on the streets promising revenge to whomever? I’m aware that people are afraid to speak up due to the fear of retaliation if the accused finds out but we have to remind ourselves that if we were placed in the same position of having our love ones gunned down, wouldn’t you want someone to step forward in order to find some resolution and peace when you can place a face with crime. Our children and other innocent victims are being murdered on our streets and even within the sanctity of their home. I’m not saying that this is the ultimate solution to the problem but it definitely could be a start if not a deterrent.

WE MUST STAND UP, UNITE, AND FIGHT FOR OUR CHILDREN AND OUR COMMUNITIES!

Troy’s Perspective:

With the recent influx in crime in the Chicagoland area, what can we do as a society/community to save our streets and keep our children safe? After having the privilege of being in the audience of the theatre production that was directed by Mr. James Pringle and the Harlem Theater Company of Chicago, it was quite apparent. The production was thought provoking, intriguing and current with the reality that we face in today’s times. The reality was shown that many of us are restricted by our fears (retaliation or the unknown) and therefore don’t do anything to stop criminal activity that some of us witness and/or hear. Relying on the police, teachers and politicians to solve all our problems is not the answer, but the answer is with us all.  We have the moral responsibility to nurture, inform and participate in our community.  If we don’t help each other who will.

As we mature and time passes on, we are destined to change.  I once had the mentality of turning a blind eye and staying out of other peoples’ business. By taking on this approach as a code of the community this will only leave us all to suffer. In some ways, we are all connected and affected by the actions of others which means that the troubles that some face are troubles that we all face as a whole. By doing nothing only perpetuates the dilemma and makes things more difficult. The ideology of “every man for themselves” makes us individualistic and self destructive. What are we teaching our youth? The youth of today have many day to day challenges living in the inner city. Our children will continue to duck and dodge bullets, witness crimes and feel lucky to reach the age 18 unless we speak up, speak out and do something. Because of the unwritten rule of “Don’t be a snitch,” children are getting bullied at school at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, many confrontations with bullies go unnoticed because children are scared to speak up. Often enough, when they decide to speak it’s usually negative (with a weapon causing a life changing situation).

What would you do??? Picture this scenario of an incident involving a man that was terrorizing a neighborhood.  The man was charged with kidnapping, raping and killing several middle school girls. After interviewing several students and members in the community, the man was seen walking around the school in the afternoon when children were being released. A number of students mentioned that the man looked strange at the young girls but were scared to say anything. Numerous members in the community mentioned, they thought it was “quite strange for this man to walk around the school as the kids were getting released,” but failed to speak up. The result is that 4 middle school girls were kidnapped, raped and killed over a span of 2 weeks. What would you do???

The answer is clear, speak up, speak out and do something, the life you may be saving just may be your own or the one that you love.

TEACHERS' STRIKE: EDUCATION MUST CONTINUE

Nadirah’s Perspective:

This past Monday marked the first day of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Teachers’ Strike.  Even though I am very torn about my stance on this issue because I use to teach within this very same system, I always revert back to the horrible outcome of the children missing an unknown number of school days.  Last night, hubby and I were watching the news and we found ourselves becoming more and more frustrated with the cover piece.  They interviewed inner city children by asking them, “What have you been doing since the strike?” Their answers varied but included: watching TV, playing video games, playing basketball, riding my bike with my friends, and hanging out.  But wait a minute because it gets worse.  When they interviewed some of the parents on their personal feelings about the strike, they said that they were more concerned about their children getting shot while outside playing and walking the streets when they should be in school.  Can you see what direction I’m getting ready to go into right now?  I have a question!  If you are so fearful about the safety of your children while they are playing and hanging around outside, then why not make them stay in and do some math problems and/or reading projects that you as a parent can assign while the children are out of school?

During my years of teaching, I noticed that many parents left all educational instruction to the responsibility of the teachers. To be fair about this, I would recognized that some of the parents were busy working multiple shift jobs and/or were ill-equipped themselves to understand and aid their children with homework assignments. However, there is no excuse to run to Dollar Tree, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. to buy academic workbooks, pull out the answer key page, and hand them four to five pages of work to do to stimulate their intellectual brain cells.  If money is a problem, another solution is to go to the local library, have them pick out three books of their choice, and make them write an age appropriate book report ranging from one to five paragraphs. If the library is too far or nonexistence in your neighborhood, another solution is to gather all the newspapers, magazines, and books in your house, pick out an article (more than likely you read) or chapter, and have them do a report about that article or chapter. For the teens, questions they could cover would be: what was it about, was there a protagonist/antagonist, when was it written, is it relatable to today’s society, who was your favorite character, and what did you learn from it?  For the little ones: what was it about, did you like/dislike it, did you like the pictures, can you draw one of the characters for me, etc.

On A Side Note:
There is a contest being held at Chicago’s Navy Pier on Saturday, November 17, 2012 called Young Inventor Challenge that children ranging from 6 – 18 years of age can participant.    All participants must submit an original and working prototype of a toy/game invention and an accompanying poster display.  There are prizes and acknowledgement earned by the winner. Here’s the link: www.younginventorchallenge.com

The point that I’m getting at is the fact that even if the teachers’ strike is active with an indefinite date of ending, there is no reason why our children should not be able to continue their education on their own with the guidance and resources of their parents.

WE MUST CONTINUE TO INSPIRE, EDUCATE, AND MOTIVATE OUR CHILDREN!!!

Troy’s Perspective:

Being the only child to parents that are both teachers and extremely involved in the educational system, I never had a summer where I was not challenged academically. As my wife mentioned, children are publicly speaking on the news about how they are wasting time at home and/or outside. My mother and father (CPS teachers) often struggled the first two months of the school year re-teaching their students what they learned the year before because of the lack of schooling during the summer months. Where does learning begin? As I look back, I thank my parents for investing their time in me and preparing me for my future. My parents were very strict; I had to complete several pages in both English and math workbooks before the idea of going outside was an option. If my workbooks were fully complete my father then made me read the newspaper out loud to him (I despised this exercise most of all). My father not only supervised while I completed these exercises, but also reviewed my homework daily. This commitment from parents doesn’t take place today.

PSA to All Parents:
Please invest in your children and take the time to ensure that their learning continues throughout the year despite any vacations. Learning is a continuous process and should never take a break. This will only better prepare our children for future achievement. Don’t leave the entire educational process up to teachers, which is not fair to teachers or your child. Once again, where does learning begin?  Your children reflect you and your household, not the teacher. The educational exercise that I once could not stand always gave me the leading edge once in the classroom; in spite of, being ridiculed by family members and friends. As I look back, the constant learning processes gave me the drive and influence to become the engineer that I am today. Thanks Mom & Dad. Many children are misguided and learn more from the television and the streets than their parents, which is truly sad.

Please understand the struggles that these teachers face and what they are fighting for. They are only trying to better the education of the youth of the Chicago Public School system that are sometimes troubled and misguided. Classrooms are over populated (35+ students (fire hazard)), under resourced (not enough books, no computers and other supplies) and unequipped with air-conditioning. It is truly amazing that this strike did not happen sooner.

While the teachers are fighting for your children, please invest in the time and efforts to ensure that your kids are learning at home. That is where the learning process both starts and ends.

“Be the motivating influence that will lead your children to a promising future by giving the gift of not just a public education but a loving education.”

THE RIGHT TO VOTE

Nadirah’s Perspective:

Every four years, Americans are given the great responsible of choosing a new presidential leader.  This civil right allows us to be a part of history by voicing our opinions of who we want as our nation’s representative.   Many times I have run across an individual that really believes that it is a waste of time to go to the polls and vote because it’s “rigged.”  The irony that I’m faced with is that even though I totally disagree with that frame of thought, I will defend tooth and nail that as an American, they have that right to think that way and say so aloud.  The internal struggle I often find myself fighting is the urge to start an open forum/debate on the documented history of others (African-Americans and women) organizing, finding legal and spiritual representation brave enough to face the judicial system and demand a revision of the U.S. Constitution, tolerate harassment, endure physical and psychological torture, suffer from police brutality, and so on; just to have the freedom to be seen as an equal human being with the right to vote.  Today, we are faced with a political party that wants to end Planned Parenthood and medical coverage for cancer patients, dismantle Medicare, and cut financial aid, while maintaining tax breaks for the wealthy and leading the ideology to homeowners that are facing foreclosures, “Don't try to stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom.” These are topics that should be enough of a reason why we should all exercise our right to vote.  I worry about the state of our government and what will be the outcome for our middle and low income families.  People depend on free health care and medical coverage for cancer patients.  On a personally note, my mother was blessed to be diagnosed and treated through this very same coverage, but what about the other women who were not fortunate to reside in a state that offer free medical coverage for women that are diagnosed with cancer.  What do they do?  Suffer in silence because they can’t afford the doctors, medications, and/or treatments.  It’s not fair and it’s not right!

We are at a pivotal point in this election year and people better wake up from these sluggish comas that projects visions of sugar plum fairies and fairy dust making it better for our low and middle income families. People are losing their homes, jobs and are struggling everyday to make ends meet because of poor choices made 12 years ago.  Now we have a presidential candidate that publically admitted, “I like firing people,” in other words, putting profits before people.  We have a current Speaker of the House that made national news when his honest response regarding the nature of the election and whether or not minority groups will vote for the Republican candidate was made public.  “This election is about economics… These groups have been hit the hardest. They may not show up and vote for our candidate but I’d suggest to you they won’t show up and vote for the president either.” WTF…L

I know that I can’t go house to house pleading with people to vote, however, my husband and I will use this blog as a platform to extend the fact and importance of our voices thorough the action of our ballots.  You cannot in good conscience sit on your posterior complaining about the government unless you get up, get out and vote for a cause. Whether you vote Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, etc., do your research, read over these candidates’ platforms and go vote for something and someone you believe in.
REGISTER AND GO VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Troy’s Perspective:

The right to vote is something that I as an American have the privilege and obligation to participate in. Many believe that their vote doesn’t count nor make a difference when in reality it does. Many have petitioned, been imprisoned and even lost their lives for future generations to obtain the right to vote. Even today, many states are in litigation due to various laws that have been passed to withhold the right to vote unless certain obligations are fulfilled. The problem is that the necessary obligations are bias towards the poor and benefit the wealthy in the voting turn out. Being the only American born from an immigrant father from Jamaica in my family, the freedom to vote and voice an opinion is my obligation to my past ancestors of America and Jamaica that have died for the opportunity that I now possess. Family or Business first is the basis for this election. One candidate promotes his past of leading companies that will carry over to the White House as a solution to lead America to success. On the other hand, the president is promoting, “leading a nation to greatness.” The difference is quite clear and evident.  Make a decision and choose at the poles with what is important to you on November 6th.  Do your research to make the best decision for your future. You cannot be pro-jobs, if you’re not pro education!

I personally know that more Americans relate to a person that grew up in a single parent family home (sometimes without health insurance), receive support and rearing from other family members (grandmother, etc.) and took out student loans further higher education. This simply outlines the typical American family that millions can not only relate to but are living today. One candidate’s lifestyle was totally different; with his father being governor of Massachusetts, a presidential candidate, chief executive of a top motor company, this candidate clearly did not have the struggles that the average American has to go through on a daily basis. This candidate also spoke to a group of college students and stated, “If you want to start a business, ask your parents for the money,”…  Really!  Is this guy serious, how is he really going to look after my interest when he cannot relate to the interest of the average American?  By personally following our government, one party was very adamant about fighting to abolish the laws of affirmative action, health care for all, equal wages for women and gay marriage. Importantly, one party has no morals or ethics but innate greed to make money for themselves and their constituents. The difference in this election is clear among both parties, make the choice. Family or business, I choose family every time because who and where would we be without family.

HONEY BOO BOO CHILD

Nadirah’s Perspective

I would like to start off by giving a disclaimer that just because we’re commenting on this particular program; we are not soliciting for new viewership of this show.  With that being stated, let us begin. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is a new reality show on the TLC network (spinoff from Toddlers and Tiaras) that follows the life of a 6 year old girl named Alana Thompson (gave herself the name Honey Boo…) and her family, which consist of mother June Shannon, father Mike Thompson (Sugar Bear), 17 year old sister Anna (Chickadee) and her newborn child Kaitlyn, Jessica Thompson (Chubbs), and 12 year old sister Lauryn Thompson (Pumpkin).  I will post some videos below to give you a preview of the “New Kardashians.”

The problem that I have with the show is that not only does this show continue to exploit the behavior of an ill-mannered, smart mouth child and reinforcement of dysfunctional family values;  through the power of television, the world is granted a pass to label this as quality entertainment/education on The Learning Channel network.  Hopped up on the homemade concoction of Go-Go juice (Red Bull and Mountain Dew mixed together) because she’s in the pageant circuit, this cherub shaped child is making comments like, “a dollar makes me holler” while sporting halter tops but wait because it gets better.  It has been recently reported that she was dancing for dollars on tables within a bar.  First of all, spell “dollar” and then I will be impressed!  Understand that I am not blaming little Alana for her misguided quips or actions… I BLAME THE MOTHER!  This woman is using this girl as her golden goose without concern for the future ramifications of her actions.  Be careful Dr. Frankenstein, your creation will get older and she might start telling you what she is and isn’t going to do while looking for that next drug to give her that jolt of energy and speed when her body gets acclimated to Go-Go juice because she’s making all the “dollars.”

Is this the current state of television? So far, the only positive comment that I can make about the show is the fact that it is not an African American family.  The critics are having a field day with its negative comments or concern for the parental control and guidance of the child/children but this doesn’t negate the fact that there are still people in the world that will faithfully tune in to watch the antics of this little girl, the jolly mother, and the rest of the delusional family.  At this point in my life, I am in totally agreement with the famous quote, “Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything.” I don’t know about everyone else but I’m sick and tired of watching my fellow queens, kings, and others throwing drinks on each other, fist fighting one another, talking crazy to whomever is within earshot distance in the street, bullying each other on YouTube sites, encouraging their offspring to use vulgar language or dance inappropriately to whatever is the new song at the time, etc.  THIS MADNESS HAS GOT TO COME TO AN END! Please always keep in mind that as we age, these young minds that have been raised on these immature methods of interpersonal communication and conflict resolution will be in charge of our future civilization, financial stability, and health care.  We can take a look at our current state and see that as a society, we are not doing as well as I know we could be doing.  Partly because of what is airing on television and what is not being controlled within the home.

Honey Boo Boo's Mom
June Shannon's Mugshot

Troy’s Perspective

The young girl by the name of Honey Boo-Boo is the latest discussion of the country. This is another acquisition by “Big Business” that is encouraged by a misguided and traitorous parent for the all mighty dollar.  Overnight, Honey Boo-Boo and her mom have been criticized, ridiculed and soon to be humiliated by the petulance of viewers worldwide.  The child has no place to be criticized, but the mom on the other hand is a different story.

Many agree that viewers are tuning in to laugh at the mockery of a young 32 year old mother exploiting her family for the world to see and make judgment. With the abuse of celebrity and stardom, what is going to be the long-term outcome of this sudden child reality star?  After the show is long gone and off the air, will Honey Boo-Boo do whatever it takes to get back on television or will she become one that falls victim to despair which can lead to a life of drugs and alcohol to cope with the pain of no longer being relevant on television? Only time will tell.  With the assistance of Go-Go Juice and Honey Boo-Boo being hard-pressed by her mom to execute outrageous acts and give a show, will she become one that is uncontrollable and defiant towards her mom as a teenager?  We all know what happens to children exposed to stardom, i.e. Gary Coleman, Lindsay Lohan, etc.  Is it too hard for Honey Boo-Boo to be encouraged to succeed academically or having some social responsibility of charity? Should she be directed to plan for a future of promise and wisdom instead of destruction?  I guess that wouldn’t create enough high ratings.  I can see ten years from now when her mom has a feeling of trepidation and endeavor to be a responsible parent. That will be a show to look forward to, Raising Honey Boo-Boo -The Teenage Years.  The show’s premise would follow the pain, anguish and disgust of the monster created and the top-billing star would be none other than June Shannon (Honey Boo Boo’s Mom). Wow!!!

MICHAEL JACKSON: THE IMMORTAL World Tour

Nadirah’s Perspective:

Last month, my husband and I were fortunate to go and check out Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour presented by Cirque du Soleil at the United Center.  I must say that it was the experience of a lifetime.  Please keep in mind that I was blessed to attend the BAD Tour and nothing will ever top that on my bucket list; however, I will say that this show was definitely number 2. Although the “immortal” King of Pop is not physically with us, Michael Jackson’s spirit lives on and it is brilliantly showcased on stage throughout various performances.  Remembered for his personal influences within the music industry, gifts of songs, messages of love and awareness, and plethora of dance movements, the premise of this concert provides an ingenious platform to artistically give a storyline of Michael’s contributions to the world through visual art, movement, and music.  This is displayed throughout this spectacular show with the use of animated characters, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, singers, and musicians.   The event opener introduced five talented dancers and by way of infusing the use of a projector, a humongous projection screen, and high wired safety harnesses, they managed to outrun speeding El trains and scaled tall buildings to the song,  Working Day and Night.  Other highlights of the show included a curvaceous woman dressed in a nude skintight catsuit who took aerial pole dancing to another level while performing to the song, “Dangerous” (Lol, I do believe that was the favor among the men), an outrageously gifted one-legged dancer/gymnast, a music montage performed by 10 dancers covered in multi-colored light suits, and separately well-choreographed dance routines with silver-metallic robots and 1930-40’s pin-striped suited gangsters.   SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t give the whole truth by omitting the fact that there was one part of the show that I didn’t like... a dance routine to the song, “Scream.” I felt that this particular part of the show needed to be revised; but overall, everything else about the show was spectacular.

If given the chance, please take the opportunity to check out Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour before it travels internationally and embrace an entertaining evening filled with great music and performances.  An enormous perk is a night of hearing timeless songs: Thriller, Will You Be There, Billie Jean, They Don’t Really Care about Us, Smooth Criminal, Earth Song and the list goes on and on. My husband can attest that I left the stadium and parking lot singing and playing Michael Jackson songs all night long. WE MISS YOU MICHAEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Troy’s Perspective:

The Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour by Cirque du Soleil was breathtaking. This two-hour long spectacle was one for all ages to enjoy and take part in the incomparable music of Michael Jackson. The art and beauty of the performers to the music was phenomenal. My wife was on her feet, clapping, singing and dancing the night away with others while being regaled by the performers as they judiciously clamber in/out of various positions. This production was vehemently enjoyed by all who watched as we admired and listened to the musical largesse that Michael Jackson’s legacy left for the world to remember. Magic on the wire and control of fire, this was truly an explosion of sight, sound and rhythm that has no bounds. For a fun time that you will truly cherish, see Michael Jackson IMMORTAL World Tour for pure enjoyment and entertainment.

FOODIE REVIEW: III FORKS PRIME STEAKHOUSE

Nadirah’s Perspective:

As my birthday month of June came and went so quickly, I wanted to take the time to reflect on an awesome restaurant here in Chicago, III Forks Prime Steakhouse. I was introduced to this place when my wonderful husband decided to throw me a surprise birthday dinner/party with the secret assistance of my beautifully spirited best friend, Telesha.  I’m still plotting my payback! Now I will admit that you may find it a bit challenging when trying to locate it by way of Map Quest, Google, etc. The best way I know how to describe the route is “head to the Lower Wacker Car Pound and make a right at the corner.” I’m sure some of you know where that horrid car dungeon is located thanks to the lovely hospitality from the City of Chicago, should you find that your meter has ran out or there is no signage posted where you parked your car… excuse me as I digress.  Anyhoo, the address is 333 East Benton Place, Suite 208, which means that it is situated on the corner across from a park within the confinement of what looks to be a warehouse of stores structurally encased by glass.  Please keep in mind that they do offer valet service right on the corner to alleviate the hassle of searching for rare or nonexistent street parking (remember the infamous car pound is right across the park).

Greeted warmly by our hostess, we were escorted thorough the dining area of polished hard wood floors and white linen tables until we were seated in the rear area by a beautiful black enclosed fireplace that was adjacent to the floor to ceiling windows that offered a scenic view of neighbors congregating in the park for an evening of yoga---a ploy to keep me away from the view of the front door.  Our waiter, Mike was very attentive and funny.  He presented me with a “Birthday Cake Martini” (later learned that my girlfriend sent it to me) that tasted exactly like a sweet birthday cake that was infused with a barrel of liquor. One of those drinks that sneaks up on you after you leave the table, YEAH!!!  After giving us a detailed rundown on the menu, I decided on the III Forks Salad (consisted of mixed greens, granny smith apples, pecans, feta cheese, with a vinaigrette dressing), Filet Mignon Oscar Style (topped with crab meat), Asparagus and Hollandaise Sauce, and Sautéed Spinach. I’m not overly exaggerating when I say that everything tasted delicious. When I ate the III Forks salad, I immediately wanted to share… and NADIRAH DOESN’T SHARE FOOD! The crunch of fresh greens, sweet/sour taste of the apple, meaty texture of the pecans, and the creamy taste of the feta cheese created a flavorful and fulfilling salad. I had to force myself to stop eating it, just so I would maintain my appetite for the rest of my meal.

When the main entrée arrived, the plate appeared as a simple work of art (I tried to include a photo below but I already started to eat the entree).  The first bite revealed the perfect medium-well filet that was moist and well-seasoned with pepper.  The jumbo lump crab meat immediately became my steak sauce.  Every slice of beef was met with crab and a little swirl of the hollandaise sauce… OMG, I’M HUNGRY AGAIN.    Let’s not forget the spears of asparagus and sautéed spinach which was a great complement to the meal.  I could literally taste the butter and garlic that was infused within the spinach.  I honestly could have eaten the spinach by itself as a meal.  I probably wouldn’t have a friend to talk to afterward but I wouldn’t care! I must also mention that the wait staff rotates around the room with unlimited dishes of sliced tomatoes and grilled green onions to enhance your meal.

In general, I had a wonderful dining experience that any foodie would greatly appreciate. A welcoming hostess, an attentive manager, an entertaining waiter, a delectable meal created by a talented chef… what more could a birthday girl ask for?!

FYI, I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with the Executive Chef Clark Grant, who was very personable and made sure that we were comfortable and thoroughly enjoying ourselves on the rooftop.  Keep doing what you are doing Clark because you are truly gifted in the culinary arts.  We will definitely be back at III Forks!  J

Troy’s Perspective:

III Forks Prime Steakhouse is a Chicago gem that you must experience. Unfortunately, if unfamiliar with the area, the address is hard to find. Once the place is found, you are welcomed to a spectacular experience. I surprised my wife with dinner and the presence of her close friends. Our experience was 1st class. Reservations were made ahead of time for her friends to surprise my wife after dinner on the rooftop for drinks.

From the beginning, the ambiance was one of modern décor with Midwest flair. Prices were moderate, but as we all know, “you pay for quality.” My wife and I had to sit in the back next to the fireplace so my wife would not recognize her friends as they made their way to the rooftop for her birthday surprise. By the time we ate, our meal was impressive and service was 5-Star. Due to the look of satisfaction and pure joy from every bite my wife took, I was pleased that she was enjoying her birthday meal. The highlight of the evening was surely going to the rooftop after we ate dinner to meet her friends. The environment of III Forks’ rooftop and the scenery of downtown Chicago is a sight to behold. Just remember that the option of eating on the rooftop is available which is great for any occasion. Once we arrived on the rooftop, my wife’s friends welcomed her with a greeting of “surprise!” As we enjoyed our evening, we were introduced to the exceptional chef, Clark Grant. This man is brilliant at his craft and quite humorous as well. Overall, are experience was one to remember and I can’t wait to go back. III forks is truly is a hidden treasure that if in Chicago it is a necessity that you enjoy the gratifying taste that your pallet is sure to enjoy along with the alluring downtown landscape.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH AND FITNESS

Nadirah’s Perspective

I was at a recent doctor’s appointment and starting chit-chatting with an older woman sitting across from me.  She talked about her health problems and gave in great detail her latest health scare.  However, what I really found interesting was the fact that she was more disturbed by the fact that she had previously lost about 15 or 20 pounds and because of illness, she was fearful that she may have gained that weight back.  Immediately, I felt her pain!  I believe we have all been there… work hard to lose 5 pounds in two - three weeks but gain 8 pounds by the following weekendL.  So why do we punish ourselves with remorse, guilt, worry, and shame over our backsliding? Because we know that we should have put that delicious double bacon cheeseburger down, passed on the second helping of anything smothered in gravy, ignored the ice cream truck with his pied piper music blaring through the area, grabbed cool water versus that cold pop, or ate an apple versus the apple pie ala mode after dinner.    OMG, NOW I’M HUNGRY!!!!!!

Anyhoo, the point that I’m getting to is that some (can’t speak for all) people want to achieve a healthier lifestyle.  Let me reiterate lifestyle because it’s not just about going on a diet and sticking to it.  It’s about eating healthier, exercising (any activity), health care, and overall mental/spiritual/emotional well-being.  Not to brag, but I’m often mistaken to be in my early twenties but only after I lost 25 pounds and really took notice and corrected what I was eaten and placing on my body and hair (chemical-laded lotions, potions, and sprays) on a daily basis.  This enclosed video below was filmed late October of 2011 and can give you a better idea of my past and present weight and lifestyle transformation.

Please understand that I am not on my pulpit, waving a finger, and accosting people about what they should do with their bodies and time.  What I am expressing is the need to make the time to take a closer look at where you are physically/emotionally, question whether you are happy and draft a positive and healthy goal list of what you want your physical/emotional appearance to reflect within yourself and to others in the near future.  For myself, I want to live a happy and energetic life by traveling the world, while periodically indulging in exotic foods.  To successfully achieve that, I know I have to take time to make the brief but necessary sacrifices to reap the rewards during vacationing season.  Besides that, I also know that I am deeply concern about this abnormal wide-spread diagnosis of CANCER, HEART DISEASE, ALZHIMERS, DIABETES, etc.   I prefer to be an advocate in the fight against these potentially grave medical conditions and not an active or expired statistic.

Just Remember:
Share the knowledge and not the consistently large plates of unhealthy foods!!!

Troy’s Perspective

Before

As I mature by the day, I have come to truly understand that health & fitness is a fair balance of our ‘state of mind & state of being.’ A healthy state of mind is a mind of peace & tranquility. Those who are stressed live shorter lives than those who are calm by nature.  Of course, what you feed & how you exercise your mind/body directly affects your peace of mind. A persons’ state of being is related to their position in the world, their life/community and satisfaction of self; this belief can be directly related to what generally makes us happy.

Health and fitness are two areas of life that I am deeply passionate about. One comedian jokingly mentioned that, “Diabetes and high blood pressure don’t run in your family, your family just doesn’t run.”  As I examine the joke and really think about the American lifestyle of driving our cars to carry out our daily activities of going to work, the store and home--- we really don’t make time to exercise. Our health is our biggest and most important asset that we have, but we steadily ignore the big companies profiting from force feeding us fast foods and medications (their products). Americans are truly slaves to the taste of sweet and salty foods that we crave daily, due to the diet that is marketed to us by big businesses.  It is a proven fact that we are what we eat and still we wonder why we eat meats that have been pumped with artificial chemicals and wonder why the rate of numerous diseases increase daily (CANCER, HEART DISEASE, ALZHIMERS, DIABETES, etc.).  I can truly say this because I am a true example of this. With family residing in the UK, it was obvious of the questionable life style I was living. While visiting family in London, I had literally eaten them out of house and home and had the hardest time finding clothing that would fit me when I would go shopping.

When I became engaged, I truly looked forward to the future and decided to make a lifestyle change for self.   I noticed that when I was younger, there were only one or two big kids in my class and now there are one or two kids that are of normal weight in the classroom.  Have times changed or is it the food?  The average American is overweight and exercises (work out, not just walking) less than twice a week and eat fast food about 5-7 days out of the week. I know that I was always on the next quest of places to eat that will satisfy my taste buds for the moment.  An older gentleman stated to me that as we are young and feeling invincible, we often sacrifice our health for wealth; but as we mature in age, we sacrifice our wealth for health (as he was a diabetic and heart patient continuously paying money for medications and treatments).  This thought has stuck with me while witnessing many Americans go through this continuous cycle and unfortunately passing it along generation after generation. Who do we really influence by our choices? What habits am I encouraging others to follow? How are my decisions today going to affect others and myself tomorrow?  Am I selfish to just satisfy my urges without helping to encourage a better decision for others?  I pondered these very questions as I grew older and considered who I wanted to share my life with while bringing children into world. As I discovered my purpose, I discovered my power to change for the better and treat my life as it was given to me… as a priceless gift.  As I worked out and lost 70 pounds in one year with consistent workouts, a lifestyle change in my mind and diet, I can truly say that my presence brings power to others knowing that they can make a change for the better and influence others as well. We are only guaranteed one life, so be all that you can be!
